It’s getting cold out there! While we may not get as cold as our neighbors up north, we here in the South do experience periods of harsh winter weather and low temperatures that affect all kinds of construction projects. The roofing industry is no different, temperatures affect what can and cannot be done during colder temperatures, especially when it dips below freezing.
Fortunately, here in Georgia, we have much milder weather generally in the winter than those further north, which means we have many more days where we can provide most any service needed. Even if you need a full roof replacement, depending on your roof and the weather, you may not need to wait until spring to have it done! Here are a few things you should know about Winter roofing and how it could affect your roofing project.
Minor repairs
Most minor repairs aren’t temperature sensitive, though some are. It really depends on the repair. Replacing faulty flashings, repairing chimneys and fixing gutters are all possible in cold weather. Your roofing contractor may want to schedule your service on temperate, sunny days for convenience and comfort for these types, but any dry time will do.
Shingle replacement
Most asphalt, slate or wood shingles and shakes can be replaced throughout the year without a problem. However, colder weather can make the shingles more brittle, requiring special care and attention when nailing and fastening these to the housing structure.
Though it’s possible to replace these in the cold, shingle manufacturers generally recommend installing asphalt shingles when the temperature is 40 degrees Fahrenheit and rising.
Sloped roofs
Sloped roofs can be replaced in the winter as long as they are not the peel-and-stick variety. The adhesive component of these roofing systems is temperature-dependent and will not adhere to the sub-roof when temperatures dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, metal, asphalt and tile roofs can still be replaced even when the air hits 39 degrees or colder.
Rubber and flat roofs
Save your rubber or flat roof replacement project until after the spring thaw. The adhesive that binds the EPDM or modified bitumen to the house or other building will freeze in the winter, rendering it ineffective.
Other types of repairs and projects are usually OK during the milder winters in the South but again this is dependent on what exactly needs to be repaired and how cold it is. Contact your local roof contractor for accurate information on your specific circumstance.
When your roof is being worked on you want it done as soon as possible but sometimes safety and quality can be adversely affected if done at the wrong time. If your roof project is delayed due to sub 40 degree weather, please be patient, your roofer is doing you a favor as a properly installed roof will last much longer than one where such concerns are ignored.
