2.22.12An educated consumer is the best customer, especially when it comes to home improvements and repairs. Having at least a basic understanding of what you need and can expect will go a long way when it comes time to replace your roof and to ensure it functions as perfectly as possible. Doing research on the internet and, perhaps most importantly, asking questions will make you not only more educated but can actually save you money!
Here are 5 of the most frequently asked roof questions we receive on a daily basis.

How do I know when it is time for a new roof?

We look for a couple of things: Inspecting the shingles, are they curled, losing granules,
or shrinking? We also look at all flashings, vents, chimneys and in the valleys. Checking for any signs of wear or damage. If you are unsure about your roof and if the damage warrants repair or complete roof replacement, we offer free inspections and estimates.

How do I know I have enough ventilation?

That is a question many people ask nowadays, especially with new information concerning ventilation revealed in the past decade or so, and they should, proper ventilation is key to a healthy roof and home. Considering estimates as high as 90% Do you have soffit vents? If not, are they gable end vents? You may also have ridge vents. Proper attic ventilation is very important to the life of your roof. We inspect all ventilation to ensure it is adequate on every roof. If ventilation is inadequate, we can install all types of vents to vent your roof properly and extend its life and protect your investment.

Does shingle color matter for how long a roof will last?

Shingle color will affect the attic temperature to some degree. A darker roof will draw more heat into the attic where a lighter roof will draw less. Usually, a well-ventilated attic will perform quite well under a dark or light roof. The main thing that affects the life of a
roof is the type of shingle. Atlanta Roofing Specialists installs all types of shingles, with a large variety to choose from, we will inspect your roof and present you with your best options.

Should I ask a contractor for a copy of their insurance?

Yes, always! When you ask and receive insurance certificates it shows two things – you are
concerned who is on your property and that you are working with an insured, well-established roofing contractor. Atlanta Roofing is fully insured with workman’s compensation and liability insurance and we will provide insurance certificated upon request. By using a non-insured roofer you run the risk of being held liable for injuries on your property.

Is there a “best time” of year to replace a roof?

Spring through the end of November is typically the best time for roofing. In the South, with the much milder weather, this can extend all year round with some exceptions during the “dead of winter” months like January/February. As a rule, once the thermometer hits the freezing point, it’s better to wait for warmer weather. With today’s shingles, you can install in cold weather, however we try not to shingle in the cold if at all possible because of potential problems with installing shingles under 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, if a replacement or repair is needed we will come out and inspect and fix your roof if possible, and at the very least, institute temporary measures until the weather warms back up. Luckily, in GA, we don’t have that problem too long, but even if it’s below freezing, we will do what we can.
